Photography is the process, activity and art of creating still or moving pictures by recording radiation on a radiation-sensitive medium, such as a photographic film, or an electronic sensor. Photography uses foremost radiation in the UV, visible and near-IR spectrum. For common purposes the term light is used in stead of radiation. Light reflected or emitted from objects form a real image on a light sensitive area (film or plate) or a FPA pixel array sensor by means of a pin hole or lens in a device known as a camera during a timed exposure. The result on film or plate is a latent image, subsequently developed into a visual image (negative or diapositive). An image on paper base is known as a print. The result on the FPA pixel array sensor is an electrical charge at each pixel which is electronically processed and stored in a computer (raster)-image file for subsequent display or processing. Photography has many uses for business, science, manufacturing (f.i. Photolithography), art, and recreational purposes.

As far as can be ascertained, it was Sir John Herschel in a lecture before the Royal Society of London, on March 14, 1839 who made the word "photography" known to the whole world. But in an article published on February 25 of the same year in an unknown and quite anonymous newspaper called the Vossische Zeitung, Johann von Maedler, a Berlin astronomer, used the word photography already. The word photography is based on the Greek φῶς (photos) "light" and γραφή (graphé) "representation by means of lines" or "drawing", together meaning "drawing with light".

Could a photography student use a student loan to buy a camera with?
Q. I'm going to a community college for an associates degree in communications with a concentration in photography. Could I get enough money to buy a Canon 5D Mark II? ~$3,000. I'm planning to use it all throughout school. How would I go about getting loans or grants for this purchase? My tuition is around a grand a semester, also. I'm already paying tuition myself. I never applied for financial aid before. My parent can't afford to help at all.

A. If a camera is required equipment for your program of study, yes, it is an educational expense that is a legitimate use of a student loan. Getting the loan is not related to whether or not you have already paid for your tuition and fees. File the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov with your and your parent's information and PINs and contact your school to make sure that your information is received later next week. How soon you get your funds will depend on their refund policy, however, so check that out with the financial aid office for disbursement dates before you contract for the camera and follow through with all the paperwork.

Whats the best photography magazine to subscribe to?
Q. I want to subscribe t a photography magazine. I want one that actually teaches you and give you tips, not just oe that shows off other peoples photos...what do you suggest? THanks! I enjoy reading about how well cameras perform, and photoshop tutorials as well...the only thing I don't like is when the magazine is full of old photos from this or that photographer with a little story about them. I want something that I can read and learn new things from.

A. I'm a big fan of Outdoor Photographer. Although I canceled my subscription shortly after starting my job at the camera store where I now work... the store gets them before I do anyway and I have enough downtime to read them.

What are the best cameras for photography?
Q. What camera, or specifications, or brand that is best for photography beginners? Price between $100-300. I really want to get into photography and i have been taking mediocre pictures for a few years now. My camera now is only 6 mega pixels. At the moment i am only using the camera to learn angles. Now i would like to get a higher resolution camera to really start off. What are some that you know of that are cheap enough for my budget, and good for beginners?
