How long has the Republic of Ireland had bilingual road signs for?
Q. Can anyone tell me when the first bilingual road signs were erected in the ROI? I'm particularly interested in road signs which give directions or distances. Sources would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A. The answer stating "since 1922" is spot on. There is a real short play by Brian Friel called "Translations" that deals with this subject through comrdy, its well worth a read. It wouldnt even take you an hour to read it and it sets out the social conditions perfectly too.

Why are the road signs the shapes that they are?
Q. Why is a yield sign traingular, and why is a stop sign hexagonal? Why are railroad crossing signs circular, and slippery road signs squares? Why are the road signs the shapes that they are?
Asked by Le squelette a bu de la biere - Sun Jun 7 16:37:28 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The officicial answer to why the stop sign is octagonal (not hexagonal) and the give way (yeild) sign is an upside down triangle is so that they are unmistakable if partially obscured. Round signs give orders, normal triangle signs give warnings and rectangular signs give usefull information (the background colour of these describes the road by the way).

Who pays for the cost of new road signs?
Q. I live in Orange County, CA. They have re-sold the naming rights: the "Arrowhead Pond" (home of the NHL Ducks) has been renamed the "Honda Center". The signage on the stadium itself has been changed -- but the directional road signs have not. I guess the freeway signs are the domain of CalTrans, and the signs on the surface streets are the domain of the city of Anaheim. But who pays the true costs of replacing these road signs. Do the taxpayers pay the cost, or does the facility have to pay the municipal entity? Anyone with civil service experience want to chime in?
Asked by seaportma - Thu Oct 5 17:36:57 2006 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments

A. No matter how you cut it the taxpayer pays. Government whether local, state or federal has no money other than yours. The facility if not public, pays for it with money taken from admissions, so you still pay.

A. Hey Breezer, its not for you, when you are driving to the Bodensee. It is for the military. Means bridge carries 100 t if there is traffic in one direction and 70 t if there is traffic in both directions. And the symbol of the vehicle shows for what vehicle the traffic sign is valid. If there is no symbol of a vehicle than it is valid for all vehicles. Greetings from Hamburg to the beautiful Allgaeu Heinz

Black and white music video with a mother pushing a pram and lotsa old-fashioned road signs?
Q. I saw this on tv a while back and it totally moved me :) The video's victorian-y, and I recall a man involved in the story (bad husband), who chases/follows said woman around town for a good four or five minutes. The music itself is a guy singing, and it ends with the woman's husband leaving her and she then pushing her pram past a road sign saying 'Independence'.

How do the road signs which give estimated travel times work?
Q. I live in the Bay Area and drive to work on 101. On the freeway, I pass "signs" that give you automated estimates of driving times to various destinations (e.g. 10 minutes to 237, 25 minutes to 280, etc). These signs are updated dynamically, presumably to reflect current traffic conditions, and I have found them to generally be pretty accurate. But my question is this: does anyone know how they actually work? Is there a traffic helicopter taking pictures and some human expert who then guessimates based on these pictures and updates the sign? Is it automatically counting the number of cars that pass certain checkpoints in a given time period and estimating based on that? What is actually going on? Does anyone know for sure how these signs… [cont.]

A. I also live in the Bay Area. I remember when, how they estimate driving times, by data gathered by the Fastrak transponder (maybe now the road speed sensors). That is how I remember at that time. Copy and Paste from the How does the Driving Times feature work?

And also this site, which gives a clear picture of the sings you will see - and what they mean: Also, just in case you didn't know, when you leave a town, there will b a red line going diagonally crossing it out, I thought it was vandals! Then I found out it actually means your leaving the town. Have fun in Dorgogne, and make sure you have some Euros in case you end up on a toll road or have to pay for a bridge.

Asked by The Advocate of the Devil - Fri Dec 25 02:13:58 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Changing the signs themselves would cost very little. Signs are repaired and replaced occasionally anyway, so it could be done over time in normal maintenance. There would be a one-time cost to changing each of the laws affecting each class of roadway, plus the short-term cost of public education.
